Philippa Croll
Philippa is a self-taught artist who owes a great deal of her knowledge to her artistic friends and the Melbourne Studio School run by Richard Birmingham. She has a degree in Anthropology (Archaeology), and is interested in the relationship between humans and the environment having worked in the protection of Aboriginal, Historic and Natural heritage conservation for many years.
Her artworks span drawings, paintings, mixed media and sculpture looking at everyday objects, still life, landscapes and the human form mostly through abstract figurative works. She is also drawn to depicting individuals using portraiture.
Through mixed media and her more abstract works she reconstructs places, people and objects in the same way an archaeologist puts the pieces of a pot, or the information gathered in a dig, back together to make a narrative.
While she will work directly from life, in the bush or studio, she also allows her mind to run free creating images from mark making, wherever her imagination goes.
A recurring theme in Philippa’s work is the concept of the impact we have on our world and the people around us.
Philippa exhibits regularly in Melbourne and paints from her home studio. She was a finalist in the National Capital Art Prize 2022 and 2024. In 2025 she won the Curators Award at the Victorian Artists Society Winter Select Exhibition.
